On August 22, 2002, a public protest against President Bush was held in Portland, OR. The march was peaceful and legal, and there was no violent instigation from the crowd. Nonetheless, in an arbitrary demonstration of State power, the Mayor called a State of Emergency, and, without provocation, the police, in full riot gear and wearing gas masks, started fired projectile weapons into the crowd and spraying people with OC chemicals, both known to cause fatalities . The corporate media, in stereotypical fashion, made claims that someone from the crowd had thrown a bottle, but this was not the case and it has been disproved by the police department's own video footage. The corporate media, in stereotypical fashion, made claims about how the protesters were only a few and that they were disorganized. False. They made claims that the only incident was "just a few people getting pepper sprayed". This has also been proven false by public media. Fortunately, independent news makers have collected footage from the protest to show the other side of what happened that day - what all the corporate media station hid and what the police denied.
